Contemporary 21st century art in Taiwan shows a great tendency towards juvenile, pluralism and subjectivity. The artists of today are mostly self-mocking, humorous, rebellious and critical when observing, examining and interpreting the phenomena of their own age. On the other hand, they are overwhelmed by the modern-day knowledge explosion, information overflow, media flood, consumer-orientated culture and fluctuation of value sense carried along with globalization. They absorb and transform in order to construct an aesthetic strategy reflective of the trends, and at the same time with which to pronounce their art concepts. With their youthful adventurous nature their strategies towards the textural transformation of the contemporary culture tend to be bold applications of games, visual realities, pretensions, deconstruction, anti-realism and sub-realism with which they express their understanding of the world, their concepts of the age, their philosophy of life. Art that is brewed from these hi-tech consumer-age life experiences.

In order to demonstrate the vitality and features of art in Taiwan, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts has been affirmatively seeking international links with art-related organizations and collaboration with museums, galleries, scholars and specialists both inside and outside of the country. On the currents of globalization, it has always been the wish of this Museum to lead the artists in Taiwan onto the international stage and to create more opportunity for artistic exchange with other nations. Understanding the lack of data on contemporary artists in Taiwan which would provide helpful information to those interested people abroad, the Museum has decided to open a website: Contemporary Artists in Taiwan 2000 – 2005 to facilitate this urgent need.

We have chosen 102 artists who have either exhibited their works or have received awards during the 2000-2005 time frame. The basic data for these artists as well as pictures of their representative works with some commentaries are presented on the website.

In presenting this database and website, we anticipate the formation of closer links and more fluent dialogues with the world outside as we facilitate the viewing of contemporary art in Taiwan.
